Bulldogs – British Bulldogs or otherwise known as English Bulldogs.
Meet Sheldon & Penny the beautiful British Bulldogs we encountered on our morning beach walk. Watch our video for some facts about owning this adorable breed. One interesting fact is that although the litter is around 5-7 puppies around 80% are born by by Caesarian Section. Bulldog puppies have very large heads which means a C-Section is often necessary. This adds to the expense of purchasing one of these adorable puppies.
Origin – These Bulldogs originate from the British Isles and are bred from the Asiatic Mastiff
Temperament – they are gentle but brave & determined. Great with your family kids and pets but it is recommended you introduce them gently to strangers.
Health – Bulldogs are susceptible to eye & skin problems with their facial wrinkles needing daily attention. Wrinkles should be cleaned with a damp soft cloth then gently dried. If you can see a problem with food or debris in the wrinkles then use alcohol free baby wipes and complete with zinc or diaper rash cream. If skin is irritated or has a smell it’s time to take your Bully to the vet to check for fungal infections.
Bulldogs are not really suited to swimming in water due to their facial structure and can even be in danger of drowning. They also don’t travel on airlines very well due to their respiratory issues.
Living – This breed is best as an indoor dog as they chill easily in cold weather and have trouble cooling off in the hot weather. After a daily walk they are happy to lounge around.
Exercise – Obesity can be a problem so don’t over feed them and give them daily exercise.
Grooming – Their short hair is easy to groom with a firm brush on a daily basis to help with shedding hair.
Lifespan – 8 – 13 years approximately but the oldest known Bulldog lived for 18 years.
The Bulldog has an Alpha Dog mentality so they need a strong human leader or they will lead you. Socialise your Bully puppy early and train him to walk on a lead to avoid other possible behaviour issues.
They snore and may drool & slobber a little
