Basset-Hound Hush Puppies!
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have your very own Basset-Hound Hush Puppy? How about two Hush Puppies? Not the comfy shoe brand we all know but the adorable wrinkly long eared Basset-Hound Dog breed.
Roland loves the local dog beach here on the Gold Coast and two of his favourite Basset-Hound buddies are Hank and Bailey the happiest Hush Puppies on the beach.
Breed Origins- French
The name Basset-Hound comes from the French word ‘bas’ which means low to the ground. With their short stocky legs and long droopy ears they were bred to be badger/pheasant hunters back in the 1600’s. Their short stocky body allowed the Basset-Hound to plough through the undergrowth with ease.
Good communicators -definitely!
Their mum Sue is a regular walker whom we chat to when she’s there with Hank the Tank and Bailey. She freely admits her Basset-Hound Hush Puppy babies run her family – they even choose where they want to walk each day. If they stop at the front gate then they want to go to the dog park and if they go to her car door then they have chosen the beach. I love the cheekiness of these two.
Breed Health – eyes & ears & wrinkle care
The Basset-Hound breed can be prone to ear and eye problems and their wrinkles need extra attention so infection doesn’t set in. Their long trailing ears help trap the scent of the animal they are hunting. They are very vocal and brey “bark” when they are excited.
Exercise – daily
They are prone to obesity so they will need a walk every day to keep them healthy. This makes the Basset-Hound a perfect exercise buddy for his human.
Basset-Hound Personality – friendly and loyal
Above all they are very relaxed with children and other animals or family pets and love being part of a family.
Lifespan – 8-13yrs
The oldest Basset Hound is claimed to be 18yrs old.
